Signs, Risk Factors & Health Risks
Sleep apnea is more than a sleep problem — untreated, it raises serious health risks throughout the body.
Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Loud or frequent snoring · Gasping or choking at night · Restless sleep · Waking with dry mouth or sore throat · Getting up 2+ times to use the bathroom · Grinding or clenching teeth
Feeling tired even after a full night's sleep · Difficulty concentrating · Morning headaches · Dozing off in meetings, at red lights, or while watching TV · Mood changes, irritability, or depression
Who Is at Higher Risk?
- Anatomy: a large tongue, low soft palate, big tonsils, or narrow jaw
- Weight: extra weight around the neck presses on the airway
- Age: throat muscles weaken over time
- Male sex: men are more commonly diagnosed, though women are frequently underdiagnosed
- Alcohol or sedating medications: these relax throat muscles further
- Nasal problems: a deviated septum, allergies, or chronic congestion
- Family history of sleep apnea
- Neck circumference: greater than 17" in men or 16" in women
Health Risks of Untreated Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a medical condition, not just a nuisance. When left untreated, repeated drops in blood oxygen can affect nearly every system in the body.
Heart & Blood Pressure
Chronic apneas raise blood pressure and strain the heart, increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Diabetes & Metabolic Health
Sleep apnea is linked to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain, creating a difficult cycle to break.
Drowsy Driving
Excessive daytime sleepiness significantly raises the risk of motor vehicle accidents — a public safety issue.
Memory & Cognitive Decline
Poor sleep quality is associated with memory loss, brain fog, and potentially slowing cognitive decline with age.
Depression & Mood
Many patients are treated for depression or anxiety when the underlying cause is untreated, oxygen-deprived sleep.
Relationship Strain
Snoring and restless sleep affect partners too. "Second-hand sleep apnea" leaves both people exhausted and irritable.
Snoring paired with any of these warrants a call to your doctor or our office: observed pauses in breathing, gasping or choking sounds, excessive daytime fatigue, or morning headaches most days.
