Dental Implants in Farmington, NM

Lifelong Solutions for Tooth Loss

Missing teeth can lower your self-esteem and make it more difficult to eat, speak, and smile. Today, advanced dental technology gives patients the option of lifelong, functional restorations for missing teeth. At Desert Hills Dental Care, Dr. Schumacher and his team are proud to offer dental implants to restore your smile to full form and function.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are permanent replacements for missing teeth that look and act like the real thing! They’re anchored to the jawbone with biocompatible titanium posts, so they’ll never shift or come loose like removable dentures.

You’ll maintain your dental implants just like natural teeth. Brush and floss them regularly and visit our office in Farmington, NM twice a year for a cleaning and checkup of your implants and overall oral health.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have many unique advantages over other restorative treatments such as:

  • A permanent restoration
  • Prevents jawbone deterioration
  • Natural look, feel, and function
  • Resistant to tooth decay
  • Can last a lifetime with proper care

Dental Implant Procedure

Your journey to a new, beautiful smile with dental implants requires multiple visits to our Farmington office. You can except the following steps:

  1. You’ll have a consultation with Dr. Schumacher where he’ll examine your oral health and determine if dental implants are right for you. Supplemental procedures may be necessary before your implants can be placed.
  2. After your consultation and any necessary procedures, you’ll be ready for implant placement. Appropriate sedation and anesthetic will be applied so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
  3. Once we’ve ensured you’re comfortable, Dr. Schumacher will make incisions in your gums for the titanium implant posts. The implants will fuse to your jawbone in a natural process called osseointegration. Healing usually takes about three to six months
  4. Once the healing period is complete, you’ll return to have your permanent restorations attached to the implants. Then, you can walk out of our Farmington office with your new smile!

Are there complications associated with dental implants?
Do I have to change what I eat and drink after getting dental implants?

After implant surgery, you’ll have to wait until the anesthetic wears off before eating. This helps ensure you don’t damage your fresh implants, lips, cheeks, or tongue by biting down too hard.

Dr. Schumacher will advise you on what is and isn’t safe to eat and drink once your implants are placed. Some foods that are safe to eat after dental implant surgery include:

  • Applesauce
  • Jell-O
  • Yogurt
  • Pasta
  • Smoothies

Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, or chewy and drinks that are hot, alcoholic, or sugary. These can damage your implants, increase your tooth sensitivity, and set back your healing process.

You can slowly start reintroducing foods from your normal diet after about a week. Contact us if you experience any lingering pain or discomfort after ten days.

Are there complications associated with dental implants?

Risks associated with dental implant surgery and dental implants are rare and often minor. Some risks associated with dental implants include:

  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Wobbly or cracked posts
  • Injury to the surrounding area

Luckily, these issues are typically easy to treat. Having an experienced dental surgeon like Dr. Schumacher performing your procedure will greatly reduce the risk of any complications arising.
